STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — The city of Sturgis estimates that 739,000 people attended this year's 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, setting a record.

The city bases its estimate on a number of things, including state Department of Transportation traffic counts, sales tax collections and the amount of garbage hauled away during the rally.

Attendance projections for this year's rally in August breached 1 million people. The official estimate didn't reach that but still beats the record of an estimated 633,000 people who flooded Sturgis at the 60th rally in 2000.
