Church Hymns And Beer

Beer and Hymns The Gathering
Facebook/The Gathering

It might not seem that singing church hymns and drinking a cold one should go hand in hand.  And normally….they don’t.  But many congregations are doing what they have to do to entice new members, even if it includes non-traditional ideas such as singing hymns and drinking beer.  Believe it or not, this concept is becoming more popular.

Supported by the First United Methodist Church in Fargo, North Dakota, a small church called The Gathering, invites parishioners to join in and sing their praises with beers in hand.  Congregants of The Gathering meet in local bars once a month, drink beer, sing traditional church songs, socialize and praise God.

Taking the idea from a church in Denver, Colorado, Methodist Reverend and Pastor of The Gathering, Cody Schuler, feels that meeting over a couple beers is more like what a church should be doing.  And that is getting to know someone and the community.

Every time I come away having gotten to know somebody better than I did before, whether it’s a new person or somebody I’ve known for a long time. So it really is a matter of it’s what church is really about and that’s community.

Schuler has been a pastor for 12 years and has served in faith at several churches.  But by leading those that attend The Gathering, Schuler wants to attract those that may have lost their faith and been turned off by church.  Schuler says that he has found many people that have been hurt by church and simply want to do church differently and heal their faith.

Many people who attend the beer and hymns events sponsored by The Gathering, feel comfortable and enjoy singing songs of praise in a relaxed atmosphere.  The hymns are traditional, but the setting is not, allowing the congregants to feel that their faith doesn’t have to be confined to being inside a church.  Because of this, Schuler believes in “doing church differently”.
