After-work traffic got quite a surprise with lane closures on major Sioux Falls streets. Concrete expansion joints were unable to sustain their form during hot weather.

Temperatures soared into the mid-90’s in the area on Tuesday. As a result, the Engineering Division reported multiple concrete blowouts in various areas.

The most extensive traffic disruption was for northbound and southbound traffic on Minnesota Avenue which was reduced to one lane between West 57th Street and West 85th Street. Northbound Minnesota Avenue was also detoured westbound on West 77th Street and then northbound on Lyncrest Avenue to West 69th Street.

Other areas of concern were reported on eastbound 41st Street near Kuehn Park Road. Also 60th Street North had one westbound lane over I-29. Benson Road was affected near St Paul Avenue.

Reports of traffic control were needed on Interstate 29 because of buckling concrete in both southbound lanes between Dell Rapids and Baltic. Cars were shifted to the shoulder as a precaution.

Fortunately the spike in temperatures will be short-lived. Temps will drift back into the 80’s with rain possible later in the week.
