As things currently stand, we don't know who the head football coach will be at the University of South Dakota in 2016, and now we have no idea where the Coyotes will begin the season.

The University of California - USD's September 3, 2016 season-opening opponent - has opted out of their deal to host the Coyotes, after receiving a waiver from the NCAA allowing them to start next season one week early to accommodate an international game in Sydney, Australia, against Hawaii.

In a school press release, USD athletic director David Herbster said:

Cal has a unique opportunity to play a football game in Australia and we understand their desire to terminate our contract for 2016. Since we knew this was a possibility, we have been exploring possible opponents for the first weekend of the 2016 season. We hope to have a replacement game soon.

As of now, South Dakota's 2016 schedule has Weber State coming to the DakotaDome September 10 and then a road date at North Dakota September 17, before a bye week heading onto Missouri Valley Conference play.

The Coyotes are currently searching for a replacement for head coach Joe Glenn, who retired last week after four seasons in Vermilion.
