BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — The eastern South Dakota city of Brookings has suspended its police chief without pay.

City Manager Jeff Weldon says Jeff Miller was suspended Friday "until further notice" for violating personnel policies. He declined to provide details, citing privacy rules.

Miller did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.

Assistant Police Chief Dave Erickson is filling in as chief until an investigation is complete.

Miller has been with the police department since 1985 and has been chief the past four years, overseeing more than 40 employees.

About 22,000 people live in Brookings. The city last spring suspended its fire chief for two weeks, also without saying why.
