PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The state Board on Geographic Names meets this week to decide whether to rename Squaw Creek in eastern South Dakota.

The board recommended it be changed to Isanti Creek, which is the Dakota word for Santee.

The creek near Trent in Moody County is where tribal members camped and lived. It was originally named for an American Indian woman who drowned in the creek.

The board meets Wednesday and also plans to discuss proposed legislation for the upcoming legislative session.
