MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — The Mitchell School District might shelve plans to begin construction within a few months on a fine arts center after bids came in well over budget.

Architects estimated the base cost of the project at $11.8 million. The lowest construction bid was $14.6 million.

Superintendent Joe Graves tells The Daily Republic that officials are still determining what to do. But he says the planned opening of the facility in the fall of 2016 is now in jeopardy.

The proposed 65,000-square-foot center would be on the southwest corner of the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy. It would seat 1,240 people in its main theater. It also would have a smaller black box theater, classrooms, and space for rehearsals and storage.
