With "The Great Mosquito Festival" going on this weekend in Clute, Texas, it got me thinking about how best to get rid of the pesky little critters.

First of all, did you know the mosquito is the deadliest animal on Earth?  Mosquito borne malaria alone kills 2.5 million people each year.  Sharks, by comparison, kill only about a dozen people each year worldwide.

I remember a State Extension Specialist once telling me, "Mosquitoes are a lot like the weather, it's easy to talk about them, but hard to do anything about them."

Over the years, a number of listeners have shared their homemade concoctions for keeping the little critters away.

One remedy I have found that really does work is Listerine, the original medicinal type.  Just put some in a squirt bottle, spray it around the area where you hanging out and the little monsters will disappear.  Works every time.

Another thing I've found that works is putting some water in a white dinner plate and adding just a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dishwashing soap.  I'm not quite sure what attracts the mosquitoes - if it's the lemon smell, the white color or what - but it seems to do the job

If you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear from you.

And, finally, for those of you who claim you don't let little things like mosquitoes bother you - you obviously have never slept in a tent with a single mosquito!
