Law enforcement say two officers and a bee-keeper were hurt and a family pet died after a bee hive got out of control Friday (August 12) in Sturgis.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says they were called to a home in the 1800 block of Davenport for a report of bees attacking the home owner,

When they arrived, they noted the home's owner, who was also the bee-keeper, was hurt. The bee-keeper was taken to the hospital for treatment for bee stings. VanDewater says two officers also had to be treated for bee stings. He says up to 47 stingers were removed from one officer.

A dog at the residence died after the bees attacked the animal.

According to Homeslice media law enforcement told people to stay in their homes until they could get the bees under control. Access to the area was restricted as additional authorities were brought in to assist.

VanDewater says the the bee-keeper told police the bees were Italian and Russian Honey Bees.

He thanked the cooperation of area residents and the actions of his officers and the E.M.T.'s in treating those on scene.
