Basketball Tournament Creates Hotel Room Crunch in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — The state Class B boys basketball tournament has created a hotel room crunch in Aberdeen.

High School Activities Association guidelines call for 907 hotel rooms. The American News reports that with the closure of the Ramada last October, there are only 888 rooms in the city. And some fans are struggling to find a place to stay.

Sabrina Metz with the Convention and Visitors Bureau has been helping those fans find lodging in other towns, in the homes of volunteer hosts and on the Northern State University campus.

The state B tournament has been a March staple in Aberdeen for two decades. The tournament is scheduled there through 2019. The activities association could move it, but Assistant Executive Director John Krogstrand says that's not likely to happen.
