SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Avera Medical Group is adding an emergency department as part of a new clinic it will be building on the west side of Sioux Falls.

The Argus Leader reports that construction on the three-story facility at 28th Street and Marion Road is scheduled to start this fall.

Avera President and CEO Dave Kapaska says the health system looked at demographic changes and population projections and found that 45,000 people are living west of Interstate 29 without close access to an emergency department.

Kapaska says patients who need to be admitted can be transferred to Avera McKennan Hospital or the Avera Heart Hospital at Avera's cost.

The 70,000-square-foot clinic also will include urgent care, which handles patients with less serious conditions such as sprains or sinus infections.
