As harsh as it may seem, educational institutions need to have a readiness plan for situations where lives are at stake.

Augustana University President Rob Oliver has noted recent events on other campuses and states the necessity of being prepared. “Anybody who operates any institution of any size needs to be concerned about this. They need to take steps to train people and organize yourself so that you have responses ready in case something happens.”

As incidents continue to happen, Oliver will continue being steadfast in making sure students and faculty are protected at Augustana. “Anytime something like this happens it rattles all of us. It calls us to think about the plans we make and the things we try to do to keep people safe.”

Oliver realizes hunting is an interest among some students. There are protocols at Augustana for those who have weaponry. Guns cannot be carried on campus and students are required to check them in for safe keeping.
