CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. (AP) - An apparently armed and suicidal person prompted a brief lockdown at the St. Joseph's Indian School campus in Chamberlain.

Police responded to the school Tuesday afternoon after a report that a former school employee was on campus with a handgun, threatening to kill himself.

Police Chief Joe Hutmacher tells The Daily Republic newspaper that officers chased the man when he fled on foot and eventually subdued him with a stun gun. He was taken into custody but not immediately charged with a crime.

Police say they recovered a handgun from the man's vehicle on campus.

The school was on lockdown for fewer than 10 minutes.
