DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — A Deadwood woman is warning pet owners after her small dog was attacked by a mountain lion.

The dachshund mix survived the encounter a week ago but didn't come away unscathed. Karla Hawki tells the Black Hills Pioneer that Callaway the dog suffered numerous injuries and needed stitches on his face and staples in his side.

Police Chief Kelly Fuller says mountain lion encounters have been up in the area. Another dog was recently threatened in Deadwood, and a dog was killed by a lion in January in the nearby Central City area.

Fuller says the encounters might be an anomaly. But Hawki says people in the area need to know that there's a lion roaming around "that's tasted blood and is looking for pets."
