American Indian Studies ‘Long Overdue’ at SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota State University will soon begin to offer a new tribal studies major.
The Argus Leader reports that the Board of Regents last month approved the new bachelor of arts in tribal studies at the school. SDSU is the third university in the state to offer such a major. The other schools are the University of South Dakota and Black Hills State.
Richie Meyers is SDSU's American Indian Studies program coordinator. He says the major should be rolled out this fall with up to 30 students.
He says many of the students enrolled in an American Indian Studies minor will probably gravitate toward the major.
SDSU has the largest tribal student population among the state's six public universities.
