American Flag For a Tablecloth?

HGTV flag as tablecloth

One of our Facebook fans recently alerted us to an article they found rather disturbing and disrespectful. Let’s see if you agree.

HGTV.com recently published an article about unique decorations for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, encouraging us to show our patriotism with a red, white and blue table setting… by using the American flag as a tablecloth.

The U.S. flag code states that “the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.”

While I’m sure the intentions are to express patriotism on America’s biggest day, I believe there are better ways of showing our allegiance to the United States and to those who fought for our freedom.

When we were young, the American flag was carefully unfolded and raised every morning in front of the school. At the end of the day, the flag was carefully folded again and properly stored until the next day. At no time did we ever consider using the flag for anything else.

The writer, Marian Parsons, does however, suggests that if you think this is a good idea, encourages you to “use a nylon flag so spills can be easily wiped off and the flag can later be hung with pride on a flag pole.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, HGTV removed the photos from the collection and apologized via Facebook.

“HGTV Fans, regarding the recent article that appeared on our website … This was a regrettable use of our flag and it never should have happened,” the network said. “We sincerely apologize and have removed the post from our website. We want to assure our fans that HGTV is proud of the American flag and everything it symbolizes for our people.”

While the other decoration ideas are festive, I think I’ll pass on this one.
