ALEXANDRIA, S.D. (AP) — A rural Alexandria man died when he was run over by his own car while putting mail in his mailbox.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol reports that 90-year-old Leland LaDue died Tuesday afternoon in a Mitchell hospital, where he was taken after the incident.

Trooper Dan Podzimek tells The Daily Republic newspaper that LaDue put the car into reverse gear instead of park before getting out at the mailbox in his driveway, and the car backed over him.
