RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Attorney General Marty Jackley says the Rapid City police officer who fatally shot a man while responding to a domestic assault call was justified in firing his weapon.

A report released Wednesday says 46-year-old Patrick Lundstrom lunged at Officer Matt Macrander with what was later identified as a 15-inch white rod. The report says Macrander fired his weapon the night of September 29th after Lundstrom emerged from a hallway at the unlit home and approached him in a "rapid, aggressive manner" with the metal bar raised over his head.

Two bullets struck Lundstrom, one in the chest and one in the left arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Macrander, who has been a Rapid City officer since 2013, was placed on leave while the state investigated the shooting.
