A midday crash on Monday (July 24) led to serious injuries and potential charges against the driver.

Sgt. Jerry Winter of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release detailing the incident. It happened at 12:27 PM on La Mesa Drive north of Maple Street.

While driving north on the gravel road, the vehicle drifted toward the west ditch and subsequently rolled. Two people were in the vehicle and both were taken to the hospital to be treated.

The driver, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as 22-year old Vanessa Needles of Sioux Falls, suffered minor injuries while the passenger received life threatening injuries. Needles was wearing a seatbelt, however the passenger who was not identified was ejected from the vehicle.

More details will likely surface as the investigation continues. The Sheriff’s Office noted that alcohol and speed contributed heavily in the outcome.
