Thirty-seven years ago today (Feb. 10, 1986), the Highwayman record was certified gold, for sales of 500,000 units....Highwayman 2 was released in 1990, also on Columbia Records.

In 1977, Webb wrote and recorded a song titled "Highwayman," which he included on his El Mirage album that year....In the first verse he's a highwayman who is hanged, only to be reincarnated as a sailor in the second verse.

That record spawned the No. 1 single "Highwayman," a cover of the Jimmy Webb classic, which gave the quartet its name....But it wasn't until Highwayman 2 was released that the foursome hit the road together.

There were four verses to "Highwayman." Talk about predestination....Webb also earned a Grammy Awards trophy, for Best Country Song, for "Highwayman."
