August 8, 1974 will go down as one of the most historic days in the history of the United States.

Richard Milhouse Nixon resigned as President of the United States.

Of course there were Presidential scandals before Watergate and there have been Presidential scandals since.  But this was the only time a President stepped down.

The details of the Watergate scandal have been discussed (and cussed0 elsewhere and will be for years to come.  But there is one fact that is not in dispute.

On August 8, 1974, President Nixon told the nation (and the world) he was resigning his office effective the next day at noon Eastern time.  Gerald R. Ford would be the new President.
