3 Challenges to Pine Ridge Alcohol Vote Denied
PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) — A hearing is scheduled for later this month on a challenge to last month’s vote legalizing alcohol on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Election Supervisor Francis Pumpkin Seed says a couple of tribal members filed a restraining order.
He says it’s one of three challenges the election commission has denied, and none of the three took it to the Supreme Court, which would be the next step under tribal code.
Pumpkin Seed says the time to appeal the vote has expired.
He says the Oglala council is moving ahead to adopt a code that will oversee the sale of alcohol on the reservation.
But it will be some time before sales start.
