25 Drunk Drivers Arrested During Sioux Falls Sobriety Checkpoint

A law enforcement official says a five-hour sobriety checkpoint on Interstate 229 in Sioux Falls over the Labor Day weekend took 25 drunk drivers off the road.

The sobriety checkpoint began at 11:00 p.m. Friday and ended at 4:00 a.m. Saturday.

Sioux Falls Police Lieutenant Jerome Miller says the checkpoint was coordinated by the South Dakota Highway Patrol, with assistance from Sioux Falls Police, the Minnehaha County Sheriff's office and Minnehaha County Emergency Management:

A total of 2,313 vehicles went through the checkpoint, which was set up to stop vehicles in both directions on Interstate 229, just east of Minnesota Avenue.

In addition to the 25 DWI arrests, officers made 11 misdemeanor drug arrests and wrote other tickets for such offenses as driving without a license and no proof of insurance.
