YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — Archers from around the globe are competing in the 2015 World Archery Youth Championships in Yankton.

The Daily Press & Dakotan reports that opening ceremonies were held Sunday afternoon at the National Field Archery Association's Easton Yankton Archery Complex.

More than 500 archers representing 51 countries are taking part in the tournament. World Archery Secretary General Tom Dielen told the crowd Sunday that Yankton this week is "the heart of world archery."

The Switzerland-based World Archery Federation awarded the tournament to Yankton a year ago, and the city has been preparing since. The World Youth Championships are held every two years. The last two tournaments were in China and Poland. The last U.S. city to host was Ogden, Utah, near Salt Lake City, in 2009.
