MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Construction in Mitchell last year set city records.

The Daily Republic reports that the value of the record 223 building permits issued by the city in 2015 totaled nearly $44.7 million, surpassing the previous high of $36.1 million in 2014.

The majority of the value came from new commercial construction, commercial additions and new residences. Six permits valued at more than $1 million were issued in the city last year, including one for a $14 million school fine arts center.

Mitchell Area Development Corp. Executive Director Bryan Hisel says the record building signals high consumer confidence in the community.

Mayor Jerry Toomey says Mitchell is "a city on the grow."
